Jasmine McGlade
Jasmine McGlade
Jasmine McGlade is a contemporary American artist whose work spans photography, painting, writing, and directing. Drawing inspiration from lived-in settings, she uses foreground elements, shadows, lines, and subjects’ gazes to create evocative, often haunting images. Her photography explores the human condition, spirituality, and nature, with a focus on portrait and street photography, and a preference for natural light. Working primarily with 35mm film, she blends candid moments with directed compositions, capturing both the planned and unplanned to maintain a close connection with the world around her. While her photography is serious and deliberate, her painting, created under the moniker Dagu, is characterized by expressive abstraction, vibrant colors, and an intuitive approach that embraces play and childlike freedom.
Jasmine’s diverse artistic practices reflect her rejection of rigid cohesion, exploring various styles in both her photography and painting. In her paintings, she emphasizes thick paint, bold outlines, and simplified human forms, often depicting bodies and nature with obscured faces. Her work is unified by a distinctive focus on texture and layers.
In addition to her art, Jasmine has had a notable career in film. She executive produced La La Land, which won six Academy Awards® and seven Golden Globes, and played a key role in the production of Whiplash. She also produced Damien Chazelle’s Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, which was critically acclaimed. Jasmine directed music videos for major artists, including Gregory Alan Isakov and Max, and worked with top-tier production companies like Netflix and SpringHill. Her feature directorial debut, Maria My Love, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and earned critical recognition.
